Children’s Education Programs

Children's Education Programs

Family Haven supports the education of children in elementary school through high school about recognizing and preventing abuse by promoting tolerance, diversity and self-esteem.

Children and teens that have witnessed domestic or sexual violence / abuse have a much higher chance of being an abuser or being abused. As we know abuse comes in many forms. It can range from pressure to have sex to intimidation and anger.

Early Elementary Training

During the emergency shelter and temporary housing programs women receive training to help their young children through this difficult time. Our goals for this training are simple:

  • Victims of domestic violence will actively engage in ways to nurture their children, understand their children’s feelings and behaviors, and develop strategies for positive parenting.
  • Parents and children who leave the shelter will be given opportunities to connect with support agencies and organizations to promote long-term healthy relationships.
  • Parents and children who participated in the program and who have left the shelter will have access to our local offsite counseling support group for up to one year to support long-term healthy relationships.

The Family Haven children’s program works to achieve these goal in multiple ways as every child and every situation can be different. The program uses:

  • Structured and unstructured children’s group/individual trauma-focused therapy
  • Structured and unstructured children’s group for family violence education
  • Structured parenting groups
  • Parent/child monitored activities
  • Community referral and follow-up services
  • Outcome tracking and evaluation

Family Haven encourages any organization that would like more information for their website to Teen Dating (Date Strong) or other domestic violence education to contact: info@familyhavenga.org.
